4.8.2 Personal Interests

  1. As with all elected members, the mayor must exercise (and be seen to exercise) the mayoral role and powers in the interests of the public, based on the merits of the matter, and unaffected by his or her own personal interests.

  2. This principle gives rise to the rules relating to conflicts of interest. This means that the mayor must:

    • fully disclose actual or potential conflicts of interest

    • not participate in any decision in which he/she has a conflict of interest.

  3. These principles apply to the mayor and other elected members. However, the mayor needs to be particularly conscious of conflicts of interest due to the breadth and influence of the mayoral role and powers. The mayor must ensure actual or potential conflicts of interest that affect the mayoral role are promptly addressed.
