9.2 Auckland Council photo galleries and heraldry
Photo galleries
Most councils maintain photo galleries of their elected members, including past and current mayors and councillors.
Where to find council photos
- Photos of current Governing Body members are displayed at Auckland Council’s headquarters and on the council’s website.
- Historical photos of Auckland’s former mayors are displayed at the Town Hall Reception Lounge and on the council’s website.
- Photos and memorabilia from former (legacy) councils are kept in their original locations—usually near or within the old council chambers.
Heraldry and branding
In local government, ‘heraldry’ typically refers to a coat of arms, which includes:
- a helmet, shield and crest
- sometimes a motto.
This tradition began in ancient Britain and has been used as a form of identification, distinguishing one council from another.
Heraldic designs are approved by the College of Arms in London on behalf of the Crown.
Auckland Council’s approach
Auckland Council does not use heraldic symbols. Instead, like many modern organisations, it has developed a brand identity. The council's brand is represented by the pōhutukawa logo, which can only be used with permission from Auckland Council.
